Virtual Coffee with Bryna Head of Content & Brand at Spaceship

1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you do at Spaceship? What led you to content writing?

Hi, my name’s Bryna and I’m the Head of Content & Brand at Spaceship. We’re still a small start-up, so this means I get to do a lot of different things – from writing newsletters and blogs to working on public relations to hosting events. Before Spaceship, I had my own content business and freelanced for many years, which gave me the experience I needed to apply for the job!

2. What is the key motivation behind the masterpieces of content that you create?

That’s very kind! I have had a very windy money journey, so far. I haven’t always made the best choices, and while some of that is on me, some of that is on a lack of education. Whenever I write something for Spaceship, I’m writing it as much for myself as anyone else. I want to make it as clear and as easy-to-understand as possible.

3. How do you research your content? Do you suggest any generic platforms which any one can refer to?

It depends on the type of content, but the first stop is typically Google. In this era of fake news, you have to be quite picky when it comes to research, so I tend to only click through to credible news sites. I’ll take notes on the things that interest me, and those notes usually end up having a theme to them. From there, you can figure out the angle to take and start writing.

4. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read recently?

I’m reading “In Extremis” by Lindsey Hilsum right now. It’s about war correspondent, Marie Colvin.

5. Tips to manage a small team for budding entrepreneurs or small business owners.

I think it’s just about making sure you stay connected to everyone on the team. Everyone has different needs, quirks, and ways of working. You should be attuned to those.

6. Have you ever wished to meet any fictional character in real life? Which character is that?

Interesting question! I haven’t thought about this before, but I’d say… Walter Mitty.

7. Ability to fly or unlimited supply of your favourite cinnamon donuts?

The ability to fly, but the donuts are hard to resist.

8. How do you plan your content schedule? Any tips or tools to better plan or schedule content for small businesses?

First of all, come up with a schedule that is realistic. For me, it’s always about quality over quantity. It’s also about consistency. Once you have a regular cadence you know you can stick to, plan ahead. Look for trends or seasonal events that might inspire content and plot those on your calendar.

9. Any tips for aspiring content writers?

Sure, I have two tips. First, read – a lot – and when you’re reading, take notes of words, phrases and paragraphs you like. Write them down in a notebook. Try and figure out what you like about them. Second, practice. You have to write regularly and often to really build the skill. Even if you’re just writing for yourself and no one else, it’s just about building that muscle.

10. Tell us one secret about yourself that nobody knew until now.

Well, it’s not really a secret, but not many people know it: I have one blue eye and one green eye.
